Kenya - One of the world's most beloved coffee growing regions. This African powerhouse has been churning out specialty coffee for a number of years, and it's always exciting to find unique Kenyan offerings which go beyond the jammy berry tones people have grown to love.
Mwendi Wega is a factory in the town of Kerugoya, in the Kirinyaga region of Kenya's Central Valley. Traceability of coffee in Kenya is usually limited to the Factory - Kenya's name for coffee processing mills. These factories service the surrounding smallholder coffee farms, with producers delivering their coffee in cherry form. This coffee is then sorted, and the farmer is issued payment for their cherries.
After this, their coffee is mixed in with the other farmers who have brought their cherries in that day. As a result of this, the sorting and quality control at the Factory level usually determines the quality of the coffee we receive in the cup.
Expect a sweet, fruity mouthfeel in the cup. Notes of strawberry and lemon give way to black tea, with a sweet toffee finish.
