We are back in South America as we revisit a favourite region of Peru - Cajamarca. If you've been getting some tasty coffee from Coffeefusion for a while - you'll remember last year's San Ignacio - a major favourite amongst the subscription community. El Higueron promises to be another show stopper - with plenty in the cup for all drinkers.
El Higueron is a 3-hectare farm owned by Agusto Calle. Their farm consists of Caturra and Yellow Caturra trees, with higher altitudes allowing for the development of complexity in the cherries as they ripen at a slower rate. There is plenty to think about in the cup - with a toffee/chocolaty body, and balancing citrus acidity. I've even tasted some tropical fruit tones in the cup as a black coffee, which I originally didn't pick up on at all on the cupping table.
Peru is really coming to the forefront as a country in terms of specialty coffee production in the last couple of years. With small farms in often-remote areas, it has only been recently where they're focusing on traceability to the farm, with coffees previously being traceable to the region and just blended in with other coffees. This increased traceability leads to being able to find more unique cups from small producers, which is really exciting for the future.
